Random Question to the Terry Pratchett readers on my friends list: At what age would you start recommending the Discworld books? I just got asked my opinion (my cousin's thinking of getting one for her nephew), and am having a hard time answering the question.

Maybe twelve? They're understandable by younger readers, but I think twelve is about right for them to really get the humor (not all of it, probably). I think my youngest was 8 when I started reading aloud to the kids, and she liked them just fine, but I'm sure she appreciated them more later.

Hmm. Okay. He's 11, so that's probably about the right time. How did they like Colour of Magic? That's the one she bought, but I'm thinking another might be better to start. Maybe Mort...Also thanks!
I wouldn't start with The Colour of Magic because it's got so many in-jokes about the fantasies of that time. Mort would be good, I think.
