ahem ahem perturbation theory is very pretty, and electrons are identical fermions…the exchange “force” is repulsive, not attractive from the antisymmeterization

Bro, just find a linear operator that commutes with both your perturbed and unperturbed Hamiltonian, then you can easily solve for the perturbed energy of a degenerate system using non degenerate perturbation theory by taking the expectation value of the perturbed Hamiltonian with the eigenfunctions of the chosen linear operator!
