"The first white man our people saw was a black man." --Pueblo Indians on conquistadors. First African American's discovered America before the colonizing settlers. They were both conquistadors and formerly enslaved people themselves in a system that didn't enslave based on race. I'm gobsmacked at some of this information. I'll need to listen to these chapters more closely and again and again.

Okay, the details of the failed conquistadors, the back and forth of enslavement and changing loyalties, this is all just amazing to hear with such lively narration and sarcasm.
