Lisa Are you liking this book so far? I love Stegner's work.

Clayton HANSEN Oh I love it too. These essays aren't all equally good, but they are enjoyable, and Stegner has my vote for the very best American writer of their landscape (especially the western landscape, but I give him the overall 'award' as well).

Lisa Yes I agree, he writes beautifully about the landscape ... and I often stop, go back, and read paragraphs again, not wanting to miss any of the beauty. I don't want to rush his books ... I want to savour them. I am reading Germinal by Zola at the moment, and his prose is gorgeous ...

Clayton HANSEN I have read the first in that series by Zola - The Fortune of the Rougons - and quite enjoyed it. There are three others in that set that I'd like to read some day #3, #7, #14.

Lisa I think I will be content with just Germinal ... just trying to get a taste of some of the great authors.
