This book has been thrust upon me by an erudite friend who lectured at tertiary level on European literature. I didn't want to read it because I know what's going to happen, I don't like the main characters and I find the public life of the period shocking and disgusting. It's been an
interesting read. I'm going to miss Wolsey, who's had the best lines so far.

I'm finding it a good read now! Reconciled to what seems too much like a goodies and baddies take on history as it makes for a better story.

Hilary Mantel has been weaving the threads together cleverly so far and sustaining my interest in this cruel period of English history so well that I don't yet know whether I'll finish this very long novel or not. Perhaps because I am so much out of sympathy with some current politicians I cannot enjoy Cromwell's company as I probably should. I have, however, enjoyed the company of Mary Boleyn and Wolsey.
