Interesting and thoughtful. Did get bogged down with the French and names/place names, but I could push past it. I think the main character is actually quite interesting with her relationship with Flo and her articulating of the whole building identity phase.
Otherwise, the story does feel a bit subdued or maybe I’m missing something.

Less interesting, but I guess it was mostly exposition for Marie’s story. Writing is good, but I’m not sure much has happened other than seeing Marie adjust to her new duties and the family.
There are some tidbits about Philippe and his relationship with Laurence and whatnot, but nothing substantial.
Curious where this is going.

Finished part 1 and I’m pleasantly surprised. I’m enjoying the setting and the kind of psychological profile of Philippe that’s building. That inexplicable compulsion with Eloise and how he wrestles with it and also beating himself up with how perverted it would seem.
I am captivated and invested in a tense kind of way, so props to it. It seems mostly exposition so far, but let’s see where this goes.
