Are background ambience sounds the sprayed edges of audiobooks? Ugh, I really could do without all the garnishing, just give me the story and let it create its own ambience and visuals. I had to keep rewinding because I listen on my commute and I just couldn't distinctively hear the narrator well with that adding river sound in the back. I'm sure it's fine if you listen at home, I'm just being a grump ^^

Ok, it has music and sounds effect in very chapters. I dearly hate it!
It's not constant at least, so there's that, but it's so distracting, takes me out every time it comes up and makes hearing clearly the narrator (who's already not the most articulate out there) a lot harder. From the reviews, people seem to like it though... to each their own, I'd DNF if not for the fact I have nothing else to listen to rn.

That sounds like a sensory nightmare... 🫠

It felt like it, for sure - I was there squinting, as if would help me hear better, and on top of the river sound, they then layered sounds of creaking wood (for two old trees), and then switched to some sort of background distant chatter for when we reached the city in the narration. I think it is only for the prologue/introduction (at least I sure hope so!!) but that was a lot!
