The writing is exceptional and fluid, so as to keep pages turning. One point flows effortlessly into the next factoid with plenty of framing and contextual background to provide the big picture. The whole thing is peppered with statements of leaders, general, diplomats; the diaries of common soldiers, teenage children and writers; interviews with farmers and letters from communists to their soldier husbands.
