"Do you know what all this is worth?" He slaps the back of a sofa like it's the rump of a horse. She half expects it to gallop away. "More than I've ever made in my life. More than I ever could make in my life." he laughs again, a dark, bitter sound., "and it was always right here. I just had to walk through that door."
He seems perfectly content to stand there, marveling at his previously undiscovered wealth.

"The study?" Minnow asks. Everyone is excited by this idea except her. Which is odd, because she's so competitive during their card games. Maybe Minnow and River had a falling out. River certainly seems upset. But Minnow doesn't.
"The floor." It's perfect. A wi8e, open space. Birdie's annoyed she didn't think of it sooner.

Lock picking is easy with enough practice; she used to work on her friend's door every night, while she told stories and they sat on the other side.
Whenever she got it unlocked, though, her friend would slip another drawing under the door. A warning that if Birdie broke the unspoken house rule that no one could go into that mysterious room on the third floor, she wouldn't survive. And she had to survive, for Magpie.
