I am still going. I am quite torn between some of the interesting developments and the jarring writing. I can't get past a glass that falls and breaks with a 'bang' or a description of a wooden carving first being described as a 'sculpture'. No it would smash. No it is a carving. OK so yes sculpture can refer to wood but just doesn't sit right with me.

I think the writing is unclear at times. I can't say the author has given me clear reason to root for any of the characters. Other reviews complained at a new character appearing suddenly halfway through the book. She appears in chapter 5 and it makes sense because I presume she is the modern counterpart of the duo. So those reviews don't make much sense to me. Persevering.

Mmmmm well there was a rape 4 pages in which, while probably correct for the time period, I found distasteful. I managed to keep reading and am mildly intrigued. I wish I had read further before I purchased the book but will give it a chance.

Reading other reviews I might well not finish this one...
