It started out fine with some witty punchlines that made me chuckle and a potentially strong premise. It's going quickly downhill, however. Strongly reminds me of A Harvest of Hearts, which is not a great recommendation. I think I'm starting to be weary whenever I read reviews that frame a story as "cozy fantasy" and such like...

Yeah, that's her weakness. Punchlines wear off too quickly, and her humour starts to soon feel forced or overdone. This seems to happen in all her books regardless of genre, because Kingfisher can't help herself with trying 'witty' at every turn.
