I abandoned this book months ago and forgot to update my Goodreads. The Austen Project - modern authors retelling Austen's novels - is a cool idea but this one is a major miss.

Fifty-nine pages about Mr. Woodhouse seems extreme. I appreciate that McCall Smith isn't being hemmed in by Austen's scenes, or trying to emulate her voice. But, so much about Mr. Woodhouse seems a strange choice, esp when Austen explained his character in a page of prose. I have a theory, but will wait until I've finished the book to share.

Taking a long time to get there. Austen didn't need forty pages to establish Mr. Woodhouse's character. McCall Smith needs to get on with the story already.
