In today's episode of Marquise's Milestones: One of my reviews reached 1000 'likes'
(Well, 2 reviews, but one's a few 'likes' behind. All right! Three, but that one's even further behind).
All negative reviews. Don't know whether to be proud or laugh, I'll proudly laugh at myself.
Will I be forever remembered for my negative reviews? I mean, I do popular 5 star reviews, such as... such as... nevermind. :D

My negative reviews also seem to get weird reactions, but at least one of my 2 star reviews led a friend to buy the book, who read it and enjoyed it 😂😂 You got treated so unfairly for that one review!!

We should create a party, there's a good number of us bookish killjoys here. 😂
Alena wrote: "As they say … misery loves company. So negative reviews will def always garner more attention has"Yeah, that and also that they tend to raise hell and ruffle a few feathers. 😂 People love to be onlookers in these dramas.
Tina wrote: "It does seem like negative reviews generate more like! Crazy!"For yours too? 😂 There's dozens of us, dozens!
My rambly, don’t even really make a lot of sense, reviews seem to get more likes than shorter and kind of make a little bit of sense reviews. So who knows. People are weird! 😂Congrats on the 1000 likes! That’s really pretty awesome. I got excited when I reached 30 for one of mine😂😂
Marta wrote: "Congrats on the 1000 likes! That’s really pretty awesome. I got excited when I reached 30 for one of mine😂😂"Hahaha! I remember the days when I was completely unknown but to my maybe fifty friends, had my account set to private, and excitedly counted every single 'like' I got. 😂 I hardly got 12 'likes' on a good day. 😂
At what point did I become part of GR folklore? And how? No idea! 😂
I don’t excitedly count each like (I notice them for sure!!😂) but I definitely was like, this is kind of cool when I saw one had reached 30. That I was excited to see. I like the comments people leave more than likes. And talking about the books.
Marta wrote: "I like the comments people leave more than likes. And talking about the books."Don't we all? But imagine getting 1000 comments on a review, from different people!
I think some reviews have got that, but we don't count the comments. A celebratory "I got 1000 comments!" looks funnier in my head. 😂
Negative reviews tend to be more informative and entertaining than positive ones. They usually go against the grain and tell me something I don't know, and it's funnier to see someone rip a real bad book a new one than it is to see them just gush at stuff.Besides, as Tolstoy said - all good books are like another, but each bad book is bad in its own way. Or something.
My one negative review has about 800 likes on an app 😂 I must have been spot on with my distaste for the illegible body of work. Almost all of my reviews go unnoticed here & that’s ok by me! l always enjoy reading your reviews and love the conversations in the comments that actually discuss the book!
I think people just tend to respond more to negative reviews whether they're informative or not.. Something about the negative that just attracts folks.. There are two types of people that love negative reviews. Those who truly want to see if they agree with the reviewer, due to wanting to know if the book is actually worth their while to read, and then those who live by the code Misery loves company.Either way, this is good news! Your own reading experience has struck a nerve for those who've read your reviews.
🥳🥳🥳🥳
Yeah, my highest rated reviews are skewering, with the highest liked one a review of a popular book. It looks like a negative review is more likely to earn lots of likes if it's of a widely loved or over-hyped book, but for me, it hasn't worked so much the other way--that positive reviews of widely hated books get lots of likes. I guess negative feelings ignite more passion and an urge to speak out. People get so irritated when a book they hate is one that most love that they get amped by criticism of it.
Mariella wrote: "Well negative or positive, it’s still an accomplishment 😂😂😂 Congratulations dear."Mummy said 'an accomplishment is an accomplishment' and to celebrate the negative accomplishments too! 😂 Love you, doll.
Juho wrote: "Negative reviews tend to be more informative and entertaining than positive ones."If you ask yourself what your goal is, both can be equally informative. When I review books I feel strongly about, my primary goal is to dissuade or persuade, and the secondary is to record my analysis. Negative reviews may be more entertaining because they're fueled by such annoyed passion that can become sarcasm on the
Juho wrote: "Besides, as Tolstoy said - all good books are like another, but each bad book is bad in its own way."It that quote by Count Juho Tolstojainen isn't on a plaque somewhere, I'll be disappointed in humanity! 😂
Love it, I may steal it sometime...
Anne wrote: "My one negative review has about 800 likes on an app 😂"Now I'm curious! 😂
All those reviews with thousands of 'likes' are from the times when this site was far more active than now. I have a suspicion that on other apps and platforms these reviews would get even millions, judging from the number of 'likes' some inane stuff gets on TikTok and Twitter...
Thank you, dear Anne! I do wish I got more comments, but I am not much of a commenter myself (mostly lack of time but also often don't have much to say if I haven't read the book friends have.)

That categorisation is spot on, in my experience. Maybe there's a third type? Those that come only to 'rip the reviewer a new one' because that's what the reviewing style on other platforms has accustomed them to. But I guess that type is included in the Misery one, yeah?
(Pssst, can I DM you about you-know-which review?)
Craig Vasiliev wrote: "Congratulations, Marquise. This is good news. I am happy for you."The Russian mafia is happy for my achievement? 😂 I've made it in life! I can die proud now. 😂
Thank you so much, Craig. Means a lot to me that you say so, you were spoken highly of to me.
My most-liked review was a one-paragraph three star, with 64 likes. 😊 It's by no means my favorite, but one of my faves is in the top 5, so it's all good.
Caroline wrote: "I guess negative feelings ignite more passion and an urge to speak out. Literature is so subjective, so emotions and taste-dependent even without counting life, culture, and education of the reader as factors that colour their understanding of a book.
Books get attached to important events in one's life too, and that gives them emotional value that's unique to an individual. Like when you're going through a dark period in life, and a book appears that speak to you and it basically saves your life and/or your sanity. And then you see here someone rubbishing it badly. How do you react to that? Not everyone is as mature or has as thick a skin, so 'attack mode' is turned on.
Lots and lots of those cases here, both by personal experience and watching it happen to others.

Instead, I'm wordy and talkative, can't help it if I have the soul of a parrot... 😂
I want to be like Bethsy when I grow up.
I get that negative reviews draw more attention because people like to rant but it's also kind of sad when there's more discussion going on in negative reviews instead of 5 stars ones. For the longest time my most liked review (not even close to 1000 likes but still) was one I spent 5 min writing it and it was very meh book but everyone commented and yes, it was nice to interact but I was thinking I would much better like to spend my time talking about books that I loved.
Monique wrote: "I get that negative reviews draw more attention because people like to rant but it's also kind of sad when there's more discussion going on in negative reviews instead of 5 stars ones. For the long..."Very valid point, and I too feel the same way..
Marquise wrote: "I want to be like Bethsy when I grow up."Be careful what you wish for!
I've written a good number of longer reviews, too, don't get me wrong. With my top-liked review, I'd signed up for a group chat about the book, and I'd spent so much time pondering it so I'd have something to say in the chat, I didn't have the mental energy to write a decent review on top of that.
I’d crap my pants if I had 1000 likes on a review and think there was a glitch going on🤣. It’s seriously very fun😊😊😊! Also, to clarify, since I know you have gotten many unkind comments, those are not the type of comments and comments I was referring to enjoying. That would suck and not be fun to get. 😞. I feel badly for not keeping in mind all of what you have gone through with some of the comments you have gotten when I said that🤦🏼♀️😑.
I love negative reviews 😏 I like to find like minded people! (But seriously I know which review you mean and I do feel bad It has given you pain)

You are welcome.
So many people only write positive reviews that sometimes negative reviews are the most satisfying! When you didn't like a book but see a million gushing reviews it gets frustrating.
Monique wrote: "I get that negative reviews draw more attention because people like to rant but it's also kind of sad when there's more discussion going on in negative reviews instead of 5 stars ones."Yeah, that's a great observation. If it was up to me, there would be more discussion under positive reviews, too.
But, realistically, you can go only so far with all the gushing and squeeing, it eventually dies out, and so all the discussion ends up becoming a collection of 'great review', 'terrific review', 'lovely review', etc. With negative ones, there's more back-and-forth for better or for worse.
It's what it is...

Too late, I'm already learning from the best here. 😂

(I've come to terms with that, I won't forget or forgive but it was the most enlightening experience I've had here, as painful as it was. Hugs to you, Mei-chan!)
Karen wrote: "So many people only write positive reviews that sometimes negative reviews are the most satisfying! They may not like them, but they sure do like the drama they cause. 😂
Betsie wrote: "Well, I connected with you because of a snarky review, and it seems like other people are the same!"A snarky review? Uh, hopefully it was entertaining at least! 😂
Marta wrote: "I’d crap my pants if I had 1000 likes on a review and think there was a glitch going on🤣. It’s seriously very fun😊😊😊!"Don't feel bad. It's unpleasant, but you learn to take it as part of being a reviewer on social media. 😊 I've met wonderful people here, too, who left me comments on my 1-star rants. 🤣
I think I've seen the review in question. Lol. I know of the Youtuber you mentioned in it. While I tend to agree with her opinions, she should be more careful about bringing attention to other reviews or reviewers. All some people want is to throw stones, and they will go to town when provided with a target.
Beth wrote: "While I tend to agree with her opinions, she should be more careful about bringing attention to other reviews or reviewers. She chose the coward's way out, and the author is still instigating readers against bad reviews of that specific book even now. It has had longer-lasting consequences on my life than she anticipated.
Congrats on the milestone! Who was it that said any kind of fame is good fame? (or something like it, I'm bad with quotes)
I have to admit, I can think of a few of your negative reviews in the blink of an eye. Though I have to rack my brain a bit to think of one of your five star reviews. They’re more memorable for some reason. Perhaps you could put those 5 stars in the spotlight a bit more, as your reviews are absolute top quality no matter your rating. And congrats, that's a huge accomplishment!
Morphing_kashi wrote: "Who was it that said any kind of fame is good fame? (or something like it, I'm bad with quotes)"Thank you, Morphy! I don't know either, but I hope it was Groucho Marx. 😂
Thibault wrote: "Perhaps you could put those 5 stars in the spotlight a bit more, as your reviews are absolute top quality no matter your rating."Eventually, perhaps? In any case, it would feel artificial to try to put them in the spotlight, because I didn't put the negative ones in the spotlight either. It's just how things developed naturally on this site.
It's largely beyond one's control what reviews become popular here, and I don't see myself becoming one of those 'good vibes only' people either. 😂
