Enthralled by this so far. Learned so much about Venice and Florence, less so the Southern states/republics. Author has made his first explicit argument that Italian unification did not benefit Venice. Excited to dive into the Napoleonic Wars.

Loving the author’s writing style so far and wow! Italy was a mess in the Middle Ages.

Excited about this one. In the intro, Gilmour explains he’s particularly interested in exploring whether it makes sense that Italy is unified with the borders it has today considering its geographic and cultural diversity. He asks whether the country’s individual regions may have prospered more as separate states. Curious to see how this inquiry unfolds without playing into certain socio-economic stereotypes.
