“Maybe Maya was misreading the situation? Blowing a small thing she’d seen out of proportion. What if she’s not said another more insistent voice. What if there’s something to be frightened of in this place you’re stuck in? Or someone.” page 102

“I got up. I put on clean clothes and looked at myself in the mirror again. I read a lot of accounts of assault before ever writing my own. I’ve come to the conclusion that the common experience isn’t ever the assault itself. It’s the moments after. The moment you’re left alone in a bathroom for the first time.” page 144

“I don't think I ever comprehended at the time that the gossip about my actions spread as much as it did. I expected it to go everywhere in the school and I was right. It did. It was a lasting legacy and I expected it to stay with me until I graduated.” Page 43

Trust is important here. This is a trust fall, me writing this story. I'm allowing myself to fall backwards without knowing if you will catch me.
There's a chance I could end up with my head smacking hard against the concrete. Because there's a chance you won't care enough to break my fall.

GIssia Castelnoble April’s life goes down when she realises her paranoia isn’t real and that she needs to be hospitalised as soon as possible. In hospital, she begins a new life as an involuntary inpatient. She is confused by Nurse Maya’s warning about her colleague: “‘Jim likes to take the girls to the pool. He likes to see them in their swimsuits. Stay away from him.’ ‘Okay,’ I said slowly. ‘I’m going outside for some air.’”page 101
