Ok. A major part of the book is that you don’t know a lot about the MC so that explains my prior criticism. I am frequently confused. The world is also very unfamiliar, which adds to the confusion and makes it harder to follow, but it also makes it extra interesting and I cling to wanting to uncover more. I might enjoy it better on a second read (listen).

I still don’t really know why they love eachother. Most of it is convincing the reader they love(ed) eachother, not really how they fell in love or why. Maybe bc that forces the focus to be on the present time: the falling back in love without the context of the past, which is how MC is experiencing it. I’m rooting for them but I’d care more if I really understood what made them fall in love for the 1st time.

The heart of the story initially seemed to be social justice but now is a romance. The societal problems of the first part and middle of the book are left as superficial good vs evil problems that I aren’t addressed other than being angry about. And killing. It’s not quite an inspiring or hopeful angle.

I usually like the angry and secretly scared fmc trope but I’m finding this one annoying. (To the reader) she hasn’t “earned” her anger yet. I understand it has something to do with the bigotry and the societal class structure and also abusers, which is all very hateable stuff but for me to really root for such a hateful angry character I need to understand how she got there.
