FRANKENMESS: I'm a miserable monster and it's your fault! Make me a wife so we can have monster sex & monster babies.
VICTOR: Ja, I mean nein.
FRANKENMESS: *murders bestie*
VICTOR: OMG! I'm a monster! Three innocents died, and all I'll do is wring my hands and fall ill and want to die!
ELIZABETH: Victor, are you in love with another woman?

Hahaha! So he wasn't Dr Frankenstein yet but only a college kid?
Wish his formula to animate dead matter wasn't a "never gonna tell" secret, & his motives were more impactful.
Disappointing, but still interesting dilemmas.
My dear Victor, all of this trouble wouldn't have happened if you had TALKED and taken immediate countermeasures.
Or better yet, not done that experiment.
But then we'd not have this novel.

No idea what happened here. I'm a simple girl: I see a book, I leaf through it.
Somehow the 'leafing through it' turned into me reading 50 pages in one sitting without evenrealising it. :D
I blame Guillermo del Toro, my friend Becks, the bookkeeper who had this edition dangling under my nose like candy, and myself for not reading this before. It's engrossing!
But, wait, why do Swiss folks have English names here?

The monster is an Incel and instead of blaming women for his loneliness. He blamed his creator. I think he got it right.

I'm laughing at you saying the blunt word out, because in my head the cynical part of me was just thinking Frankenmess (that's how I call the creature) is so like an incel. 😂 Great minds!

"Give me a wife!"
Why? What self-reflection, maturity or good things has he done to make him attractive to anyone?
Also, I'm not sure why honesty is called blunt.
It's crystal clear to us, and maybe a few more, but what I've noticed from years of getting this into my system via cultural osmosis is that the majority of people are sympathetic and even excuse the monster on this. We may be in the minority...Uh, I may ruffle some feathers with my review... Gotta think it some more. 😂
Wait, correct me if I am wrong, but the Monster killed people, innocent people, yes? So how can anyone by sympathetic or excuse it’s murderous behavior? That is insane to me. I can’t wait to read your review Marquise! I HATED the book in 9th grade, so refused to finish it. I was debating if I should attempt a re-read, but it seems I may have been wise in my youth to avoid this one.
Marquise wrote: "Glad you all enjoy my humorous updates! I love this site for these things. 😂"That, and the deliberately, ruthlessly crushing reviews of 1-star books that need to be crushed.
I hadn't thought of the "incel" angle for Frankie. Are you going to write a modernized update?
"Donald, why didn't you create a wife for me?"
"You idiot! Get a fake wife on a fake visa like I did!"
Socraticgadfly wrote: "I hadn't thought of the "incel" angle for Frankie. Are you going to write a modernized update?"Haha, nah.
Jen wrote: "Wait, correct me if I am wrong, but the Monster killed people, innocent people, yes? So how can anyone by sympathetic or excuse it’s murderous behavior?"I think it's 50% the screen adaptations that reinterpret and remake it that have created images of the monster (and the story) that the public has absorbed, and 50% is the mIsUnDeRsToOd ViLlAiN crowd.
That's my take at least. I'm not in the fandom or have paid more attention than what the culture 'round me brought to me. No idea what del Toro has done, but for many years I've always heard sympathetic takes on the creature.
