This still isn't doing it for me. I like some of the scientific elements, such as how the star system was formed, but neither the science nor character dynamics are strong enough to keep me particuarly engaged.

This really isn't working for me. The science is heavy on this one - far heavier than I'd usually expect from a Star Trek novel. And while that isn't good or bad in of itself, the writing (and by extension the characters) are just too dry for me to be invested in.
