Well that was a heady chapter - a full-on crash course on the history of capitalism, particularly from the start of the 20th century onwards. I certainly welcome the explainer, but I feel like a better understanding would be potentially necessary for me, assuming I can find some useful texts on this...

I'm somewhat interested in the ideas proposed at the end of this book here; I feel like I'd need to see it in action to really have faith in it working as a proper system, but I do like it conceptually. Maybe I'm a bit biased, because of my political leanings, but it's certainly something I favour.

Oh, I actually had no idea about what China were doing at this time. That somewhat explains why the US were going aggressive against them over the last however many years. It also says a lot about where the US was (and still is) at that time: afraid to rock the boat and try something different, preferring to maintain the status quo.

I must admit, I'm a little confused on the distinction between 'rent' and 'profit', but I get the sentiment around the rest of the chapter. Ultimately, we're at a point where we're at the whims of a select few for virtually anything we do in the world today, and there's not a damn thing we can do about it. Maybe.

Well, this explains just why things have gotten so screwy over the last fifteen-plus years. It's alarming to me that how we — or rather, the legal institutions around the world intended to not allow this to happen — have simply allowed all of this to happen. I dread to think what the future has in store for us...

I'm starting to see the connections between the dots now. It's not a fun reality that we find ourselves in, and I'm not sure it's going to get any better, but there does seem to be a slight feeling of "you never know" at the end of this chapter.

I'm only vaguely aware of Varoufakis, in that I know he at one time worked at Valve and was also a politician in Greece, having to navigate around a major monetary crisis there. We get some insights into his origins, though this book won't be about him necessarily, as it is about his economic ideas. Let's see if my two-dimensional brain can process any of this...
