Fireplace analogy: anyone can warm a pew on Sunday .. like a wood-stove with no fire in it. Even stuffed with firewood and kindling .. it won’t function until a lighted match is put 2 it.

Mitch has a good line on kids thinking here.

So the character believes she cannot be a mother because of her bad father and mostly lack of mother .. but seems 2 me that most of the time they do opposite of what they hated and are good parent material.
But this is the reasoning in lots of these small paperback romances.
