I've been too hard on Boyd. The overly descriptive portraits of each character aside, the book flies along. I am so amused at the portrayal of the war from Nairobi. Farce!

End of chapter 1. I've only read one other Boyd and the writing already feels familiar. What is it with middle aged men war/spy books that lends them to so much crude description of body? The chapter opens with grabbing his cock, then describing his friends wife's breasts, then ends with the prostitute's breasts.
The story better get going soon because I'm not excited about the characters.
