Keith [on semi hiatus] I'm greatly considering this as the first read of '26 but then I also have Döblin's Berlin Alexanderplatz in my to-read pile.

Andreas I’m finding this slow going, but unputdownable. Doderer tried and succeeded in writing a novel without plot. There are comments from an all-knowing author to the reader in parentheses, myriad characters, and little reference to the World War between the two time periods in question. A difficult read, but worthwhile if you’ve got the stamina.
Berlin Alexanderplatz is an easier read, but also worthwhile.
I wonder if Doderer isn’t the better writer, though.
