tbh I had way more appreciation for this book before Anne and Rackham were introduced because cheap romance and semi-implied/explicit smut ruined the flow. moreover, initially the format was following the narrator within the story and switching between the two, whereas after 50% mark it blended both women together & there's no clear distinction between who's telling it anymore, eliminating the impact of unreliability

it had to ruin the prose with heavy handed, character as a mouthpiece, white guilt/saviour complex spiel that uses all the right buzzwords with tldr "slavery is bad" in a very annoying american-centric manner. ugh.

While Mary was presented as a very direct and truthful narrator, Anne was explicitly said to be inventing her story as if she was a mother with a kid at bedtime. Blending them into one completely erased this concept and it's not even excerpts from Johnson's drafts. We still get borderline POV from two women which switches every other paragraph instead of chapters.
