I read the first book. I had a hard time visualizing what they were doing with the metal: I eventually concluded that they were ingesting it? Still not sure I got it right.

You got it right! There are 2 separate series'. Did you read "Mistborn: The Final Empire"? That's where it all begins.
Yes, I believe that's what I read.
I love it, but it is the most complicated magic system in any series I have read. Sanderson could have kept that simpler.
