Cosette was sent to get water but then she ended up in the woods where Jean Valjean found her. He brought her back to the Thenadiers. They tried to pickpocket him because they thought he had lots of money, and all they wanted was money. He made an offer to them to buy her because he made a promise to her mother. They pretended to like Cosette but in reality wanted her gone. He ended up buying Cosette from them.
