I read "The Autumn Ghost: How the Battle Against a Polio Epidemic Revolutionized Modern Medical Care" by Hannah Wunsch earlier this year. Until then, I had no idea that mechanical ventilation and intensive care units were created during that epidemic. It made me think how many more lives would have been lost during COVID without those two innovations.
