Meh. I’m finding Hardy a bit obvious and unnecessarily verbose – telling us what we were already thinking, rather than leaving his prose sparse to keep us guessing. Jude’s wrestlings between his higher ambitions and baser instincts is again made too obvious and isn’t endearing; so far it’s hard to tell where this is all meant to lead us, which at least keeps me reading for now…
