What is a snack? First, the noun "snack" comes from Middle English, the English of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The earliest known appearance of the word is from 1402. In its earliest appearance, the word means "[a] snap, a bite, esp. that of a dog." ... the fourth definition holds the meaning that we commonly associate with "snack": "[a] mere bite or morsel of food, as contrasted with a regular meal or repast."
