I was curious why a story about people stranded in a national park, evading wild animals and criminals would be labeled women's fiction, but I got my answer: two characters break from searching for potable water to argue about selling a house. You're in a vast, uninhabited wilderness and a suspicious car was following you yesterday. One of your party has since been murdered and when you encounter a group of people, they fire a rifle at you. Your first thought is that they think you're following them and it's all a big mixup? What an opening. Short chapters, should maximize the tension if done well. Good signs so far.
