I think about the moral weight that capital punishment imposes more often than I'd like to admit, but Myshkin's moral clarity on this issue (& so well articulated too) is refreshing and one that has been turning in my mind. Its cruelty lies in how it deprives people of hope at the time of their death, multiplying their suffering needlessly. And this contemplation has led me to consider how it might very well remove the one opportunity for redemption that an individual is offered in life even after enacting a great sin, given the religious foundation that Myshkin's argument rests on.
