This is one side, whatever the excesses of the ignorant zealots; something about Christianity appealed to people, or it would not have won over emperors to its side. I don't think Constantine took on the toleration of Christianity as a shot in the dark. It probably was politically appealing at the time.

In a collapsing empire, it's going to be a time of upheaval, and that includes ideological upheaval. When things are falling about around you, it might be the way to give up old gods for a new one.

I read this in my new atheist phase; I was angry at religion at the time. I am not angry now, and I have more respect than I did then. Don't get me wrong, I fear ignorant zealots as much as any atheist would, but it's not the whole story. It never is.
