i may have picked it off the shelf because i saw you log it on here ... so far i like all the stuff with the construction project, i like the inn setting and all the characters, it feels very oldworld european. i really like the formal gimmick of paragraph-long monologues that are bracketed between narration and dialogue tags, kinda creating confusion about the distinction between narrator and the speaking character. i like how loose and informal it feels, despite having a formal hook; i think that's exactly how a debut novel should feel. what do you think?

Tom Agreed on all those points, though it does lack some propulsiveness that his later work does so well. Feels a bit repetitious in a boring way; Bernhard can do repetition better than he does here, where it seems more like half-baked elaboration as opposed to the deployment of almost musical motifs. Probably gonna knock my rating down to 2 or 3.
