Just finished chapter 86, The Fountain. It discusses why whales breathe, but cannot smell, from their blowholes.

“There are certain queer times and occasions in this mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a practical joke, though the wit thereof he dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody’s expense but his own.”

Just survived a lengthy chapter detailing the character and reputation of various whale and dolphin species. “God keep me from ever completing anything.”

And we’re off! Hopefully I can work my way through this beast. It’s off to a great start. “Yet, there is death in this business of whaling - a speechless quick chaotic bundling of a man into Eternity.”
