It rlly depends on what album you listen to... but basically hard rock/nu metal. I recommend listening to their "This Kind Of Thinking (Could Do Us In)" album! It's more melodic hard rock.. AND SPECIFICALLY THEIR SONG "To Return" FROM THAT ALBUM IT'S SO GOOD!!!

Chevelle formed in 1995 when Sam and Pete’s love for music really started to grow. Their name ‘Chevelle’ was based on their love for fast cars, and they thought it was funny because their father’s favorite car was the Chevrolet Chevelle. However, it stuck. So that’s the official name they decided to use for years to come. Pete had first started learning music when he was 7 and took piano lessons, but his love for music really grew when he heard some of the music his sisters listened to. Bands like Metallica and Tool were large inspirations for him, and listening to those songs made him want to play guitar. So after years of teaching himself by ear, he finally learned guitar. Sam started getting really interested in drums at the time, so the two of them started playing together with a friend in their parents’ garage. Their band was officially formed in 1995, though their original bassist Matt Scott was replaced by the Loeffler's brother Joe in 1996. They said that “Joe’s noodling was far better than anything Matt could come up with.” The reason Joe started learning bass was that a family member left their bass at their house, and he decided to pick it up one day. Long story short, after a while of learning by ear, he finally got the hang of it and joined the band. The band started playing in small outdoor concerts and clubs around Chicago, with Joe only being 14 years old.
Chevelle started recording music around 1998, releasing a demo known as The Blue Album. After about three years, they were signed on to Steve Taylor’s Squint Entertainment, a contemporary Christian music label. The band started recording with Steve Albini for 17 days, and then they released their first album, “Point #1,” in 1999. Two singles were released from the album with music videos: “Point #1” and “Mia”. Their album received an award for “Hard Music Album” in 2000 by Dove Awards. Issues started to arise with the band, however. Since they were signed with Squint Entertainment, a predominantly christian music label, their music was being labeled as "Christian". Even though the band members themselves were Christian, they didn’t want to be labeled as such. “I don’t want to put religion or politics in our music,” Pete commented. After a long, struggling battle with the label, Squint finally closed down in 2001, and the band could finally branch off.
After the struggles with their last label, the band signed with Epic Records in 2002. They then released their second album, “Wonder What’s Next,” which was influenced by the unfair treatment the band had dealt with earlier. They released their hit single “The Red,” which quickly turned into No. 3 on the Mainstream rock chart and was frequently played on MTV. They were described as having a unique sound and quickly grew in popularity. Quickly after they released two more hit singles, “Closure” and “Send the Pain Below", the latter of which reached the No. 1 position on both the mainstream rock and modern rock charts. “Wonder What’s Next” was certified 2x platinum with excess scales of 1 million copies sold in the U.S. alone in 2003. The band then performed at Ozzfest and started touring and opening for other popular bands.
On September 21, 2004, the band’s third official album was released: “This Type Of Thinking (Could Do Us In)”. They released more hit singles like “Vitamin R (Leading Us Along)”, “Panic Prone”, and “The Clincher”. They only grew in popularity and even had their song “The Clincher” featured in video games “Madden NFL 2005” and “NASCAR 25”. Shortly after the release of this album, their brother Joe was dismissed from the band. It isn’t officially known whether or not he was fired or if he left, but Pete and Joe claimed he left for family reasons. Joe, however, has attacked them online and argued that he would have never left the band like that. He says he was fired.
