I shuffle over to the tree, sliding beneath it and lying on my back so I can look up through the gnarled branches. It's a kaleidoscope of color and texture: the smooth light bulbs, the prickly pine needles. Laminated paper ornaments of our handprints, handmade ceramic blobs that were supposed to be pigs, or cows, or dogs. Nothing matches; there's no theme. But there is so much love in this tree, so much history.

What makes me happy?
This cabin, of course. And my family and our chosen family here with us every December.
But also... Andrew's laugh. A quiet afternoon spent drawing in my backyard. Watching Miles try to breakdance. Building snow creatures at the cabin. My mother's cooking. Sledding. Aaron's cheese blintzes. The feeling of drifting off to sleep with a window open in the springtime.
