When I think of slaves, what comes to mind are adults. And while that is a travesty, this book reminds us of the greater tragedy of children who were also chattel.

It bothers me to have the author impose thoughts and emotions upon Harriet without knowing what she was thinking or feeling. It’s not possible to know more about her thoughts, dreams and feelings than she left for us. “Harriet’s dream bird,… was probably snow-white…” “Harriet probably interpreted these dreams as divinely inspired”. We don’t know any of these things.
