Apparently Dickens believed there are multiple methods to reforming a grump at Christmastime. There's the subtle Scrooge approach (send three spirits to show him his own life and prompt some self-reflection)...and then the more aggressive Gabriel Grub approach (send an army of goblins to kick him until he decides to do better).
