Back way in the day. They thought Yellowhammers were evil, would catch them and hang them by the necks from door ways. Kids did it a lot apparently.

During the renaissance they apparently would make a pie, then make like a pie crust, put the baked pie in a bigger bowel, put the birds in and the. Cover it with the crust. They would then cut the pie open to watch the birds fly out.

The egg came first.
