Memoirs of an quietly disastrous bourgeois family on the outskirts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that could have lived somewhat normal lives had they not been ripped apart by the catastrophes of the 20th century. The author was born in 1914 in a city that was once Austrian, then Romanian, then a part of the USSR, and now Ukrainian, need I say any more?
