Spoilers. Life is cheap in the Dakotas. Pa takes out a trumpeter swan, a pelican, lots of waterfowl, and every hawk he can. But earlier he is without a firearm when a brigand is trailing the family and only the lucky appearance of a tough friend saves the entire family from a lonely bloody agonizing death. The same friend saves Pa from mob violence on payday. Ma has finally realized that Pa may get them all killed.
