Looking into the background of this family in real life was an eye opener. It made this novel far more impacting to me. These are real people in history who fell for Hitler and his crazy ideals. How they ignored all the atrocities is beyond me. How do people align with evil so easily?

When you read about dysfunctional families like this, you appreciate your family so much more. Also thinking people are so easily caught up in wild political factions. Even if its distasteful, they find a way to make it seem like its wonderful. People don't change much thru the years.

Not sure how I am going to like this one. Fascinating tale of people getting caught up in the craziness of fascism and thinking an autocracy is good for anyone. But the sisters are so self important. Its gonna be tough to finish it out.
