Did Hugo realize the irony of lamenting the printing press’s destruction of architecture when it’s what enabled his livelihood as a writer?

Just finished Victor Hugo’s PowerPoint presentation on the architectural history of Paris and the surrounding area of Notre Dame (book III). Begs the question: If he was such a great writer, how could he not work this into the narrative like a 19th century version of a drone/parkour tracking shot in the movies? Hot air balloons existed then, right?
