how is this book? I've been meaning to read more Graeber but some of his books seem way over my head.

This is definitely not over your head. They discuss a lot of examples from various archaeological sites and anthropological studies, and the opening uses the Rousseau myth of the progression from a natural state of equality to private property and subjugation (in his Discourse on Inequality), which Rousseau never intended as history but nevertheless persists as a background assumption about the trajectory of human history. I think this is right up your alley.
