I listened to a podcast that told the story of the entire Trojan War to get a good background before I actually tried reading Homer. If you’re down to listen to it I can send it to you. He goes through it all like a storyteller.
Also I heard Emily Wilson’s translation is more accessible for modern readers while keeping the poetic structure which is why I chose it. I’m still on the Introduction and she’s going through all the background you’ll need to get a better understanding of the story and the way it’s written.
