I can tell Steven Erikson sits a tier above "great" SF/F authors just by reading (or listening audiobook) a couple conversation between characters. Someone like Joe Abercrombie or...GRRM. Well, let's see which of them he shares table with!

You do not know how important or strong a character is, need to constantly look at the map... I use Malazan-fandom website, just google it. After every chapter finishes, I read the summary of that chapter in case I missed anything (and I do miss XD). I am loving it. The complication is a charm itself of Malazan!
