chapter 4 worth the book. Origin stories of Dominican, Central American immigrants to the US. Tied up with U.S. interventionism, difficult conditions at home, and the U.S. overthrow of leaders or support of oppressive ones (sound familiar?). Migrant flows are linked to U.S. actions in LatAm and extraction of wealth + resources

First chapter: author’s main thesis is that Latino as a pan-ethnic label hides a wide range of experiences but also that indigeneity plays a large role. Latino roots in the Americas go way before the conquistadores and other narratives.
