The BIGGEST piece of advice I got was "Don't write about depression, write a metaphor for depression, and write about that". For example, a book I'm writing is about this artist who is a senior in high school. His dad wants him to go to law school, but the protag js wants to be an artist. He has to hide such a monumental part of himself due to fear of being rejected. That's a metaphor for being queer in an unaccepting family. Plus, writing about a metaphor leads to SO many new directions you can take, and a BUNCH of different interpretations people can come up with! (I got this all from watching a video essay on being original LOL)
