Made a plan to finish vol 1 this year. Let myself get really sidetracked, but I don’t have to wait until Jan 1 to pick it back up. Finished discourse 3 On God’s Being A Spirit and almost through discourse 4, On Spiritual Worship.

Finished Discourse 1: On The Existence of God
Charnock is both logical and pastoral throughout (I don’t know why those seem to be opposite ends of a spectrum to me). He gives excellent reasons for the existence of God from an observation of nature, culture, and man’s own conscience. Ends by reminding the reader that if we say we know God, we must then worship him. Neglect of worship is as unbelief.

In discussing man’s conscience as a proof of God:
“…for there is in every man’s conscience fear of punishment and hope of reward. There is therefore a sense of some superior judge, which has the power both of rewarding and punishing.”
