Christmas Eve was her favorite day of the year. Not Christmas Day, with all its glitz and expectations, but the unassuming, quiet Christmas Eve. There was so much hope and happiness in the air, the anticipation of so many good things yet to come.

Aaaaaaaagh. That was it, the final straw. She’d just have to pull up the tiles in the bathroom, dig a tunnel with her hands and go live a new life in Canada.

She loved a hugger who meant business.

It always reminded her of her dad. He never failed to say it whenever she was driving somewhere. He’d called it the midwestern version of “I love you.”
