“This tale is yours, Historian, and right now, no-one is more important than you. And if you one day see Dujek, tell him this: it is not the Empire’s soldiers the Empress cannot afford to lose, it is its memory.”

Pretty cool to see Coltaine become a living legend in real time. I can tell is the beginning of the end for him and the 7th though.

“The young woman’s heart hammered with sudden realization.
No, not flies. Crows. Crows, so many crows—
Deep within her, the child stirred.”

This book means so much to me. It was so bleak, but simultaneously so beautiful and compassionate. Erikson has such a talent for not just writing characters, but writing people.

“Felisin waited, hoping the life would flee this husk, flee it now, before—
'You ... were ... not what I expected ...'
Armour can hide anything until the moment it falls away. Even a child. Especially a child.”

Somebody actually sedate me.

Didn’t know the rats from 1984 were for hire

But seriously, Felisin is such a compelling character and her story is deeply personal to me

“That's a succinct summary of humankind, I'd say. Who needs tomes and volumes of history? Children are dying. The injustices of the world hide in those three words. Quote me, Duiker, and your work's done.”

So I have a sinking feeling this series is going to emotionally destroy me, and that l'm going to have VERY polarizing opinions on the characters.
I'm finding this read deeply unpleasant, not just because of the sheer amount of graphic violence and suffering, but because of the abject despair and tragedy that seems to hang over each individual character arc.
Still enjoying it though! Just hard to sit with.
